Are LED Lights Worth It

LED lights have swept the lighting marketplace, and it's easy to see why they are superior to traditional lights such as incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen options.

Let’s look at the pros and cons of LED lights to help you decide if they are worth it.

  • Energy Efficient

LED lights consume very low amounts of power compared to incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen options, thanks to their high lumen output per watt. Unlike traditional bulbs which waste a lot of energy by turning it into heat, LED lights solely use energy to create light, rather than generate heat. If you replace all the lighting in your property with LED lights, you can use at least 60-75% less energy.

  • Longer Lifespan

The components of LED lights and the way they are designed to generate light extend the lifespan of these lights by far. Compared to the lifespan of incandescent and fluorescent lights, the lifespan of LED lights is far superior. An average LED light can last between 35,000-50,000 operating hours while incandescent lights can only last up to 2,000 operating hours. This means LED lights can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years before you need to replace them. Less frequent replacement means you’ll save money in the long run.

  • High Brightness and Intensity

LED bulbs are capable of emitting higher brightness and intensity compared to incandescent and CFL bulbs. A 40-watt LED bulb emits roughly 4,000 lumens, while a 40-watt incandescent bulb emits about 450 lumens, so LED lights are superior to traditional lights when it comes to brightness.

  • No UV Emissions

Unlike traditional lights which convert a high amount of power into infrared heat or UV radiation, LED lights emit virtually no IR or UV radiation. So they eliminate the burning hazard typical with traditional bulbs. This makes LED lights an ideal option for use in heat-sensitive areas such as displaying artwork.

  • Environmentally Friendly

LED lights do not contain hazardous substances like mercury, have low heat output, and last longer than traditional lights. All of these features make them an environmentally friendly option.

However, there's a concern that blue LED lights may exceed safe limits of blue-light hazards which can cause eye damage.

As you can see, LED lights are a worthwhile investment you can make in your home or business and enjoy significant energy savings, among other benefits.
